🎄 5 Simple Ways to Support Small Businesses This Christmas

There’s something special about Christmas — fairy lights in shop windows, the taste of Christmas foods & drinks - mince pies and mulled wine being a firm favourite of mine! But behind the festive sparkle, it’s also a make-or-break time for many small businesses. The independent shops, cafés, and makers that bring character to our towns rely on this season more than any other.

Supporting them isn’t just about buying gifts — it’s about helping your community thrive. When you spend money locally, more of it stays close to home, creating jobs and supporting families. Here are five simple, easy (and meaningful) ways to support small businesses this festive season.

🎁 1. Shop Small for Gifts (or Grab a Gift Card!)

Take a moment to explore your local shops or browse independent makers online. You’ll find gifts that are personal, unique, and often made with love. And if you’re not sure what to choose, a gift card from a local small business is a brilliant way to give someone a treat!

💻 2. Shout About Them Online

One of the easiest — and completely free — ways to help small businesses is to talk about them. Post a photo of your new favourite purchase, tag the local artist who made your Christmas cards, or leave a comment on their latest post. Your recommendations reach people they might never have connected with otherwise, and those small acts of support can make a huge difference. It's also nice to know our posts are being seen!

☕ 3. Visit Local Christmas Markets and Events

There’s nothing quite like a Christmas market for getting into the festive spirit — the lights, the laughter, and the joy of discovering handmade treasures. Popping along to a local market isn’t just a lovely day out; it’s also a chance to meet the makers behind the products and show your support in person. Even a friendly chat can make their day! Also for those of us who don't have a brick and mortar shop, it's one of our only chances to get to speak to you in person & get some feedback! Participating in markets is one of my favourite parts of Christmas!

🍽️ 4. Go Independent for Your Festive Plans

Whether you’re booking a Christmas meal with friends, grabbing a festive hot chocolate, or picking up a cake for the family, try choosing independent cafés, restaurants, or bakeries. It’s a small switch, but it has a big impact — helping local owners end the year on a high. Plus, you’ll often get a warmer welcome (and tastier treats!) than you’d find anywhere else.

💬 5. Leave a Kind Review

Had a great experience with a local business? Tell people! Leaving a positive review on Google, Facebook, or their website helps more people discover them and builds their reputation. It only takes a minute, but for a small business owner, a kind review can mean the world. I've been known to cry when I see my reviews - they make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside!

Supporting small businesses at Christmas doesn’t have to mean spending more — it’s about choosing with heart. Whether you’re buying gifts, sharing recommendations, or simply showing up, every small act of kindness helps someone’s dream stay alive!
